Greece to sign deal for two Italian frigates in September: ministry

Greece, which has embarked on a major military modernisation, will next month complete a deal to buy two navy frigates from Italy, the defence ministry said Wednesday.

The conservative government last year launched a 12-year 25 billion euro ($29 billion) programme to re-equip the military with new fighter jets, ships and other material.

Defence Minister Nikos Dendias will sign a final contract for the Bergamini-class FREMM ships in Rome on September 8, said a ministry statement.

The cost of the ships was not given but the first warship will be transferred in the first half of 2028 and the second one year later.

The FREMM frigates have been jointly developed by Fincantieri of Italy and France's Naval Group.
