Incendiary devices thrown at German building housing arms firms: police

Incendiary devices were thrown at a building in the German city of Munich housing several defence firms, and two Bulgarian nationals have been arrested, police said Thursday.

Rohde & Schwarz, a tech firm that supplies the German and other militaries, confirmed to AFP that incendiary devices were found close to its premises, adding their site was "not affected".

A witness alerted authorities around midnight (2200 GMT) Wednesday that objects may have been thrown from a car, a police spokesman told AFP.

Police found one incendiary device alight, which was immediately extinguished, he said. A second device was defused.

"The building complex houses several arms companies, so we assume a political background," the police spokesman said.

He declined to give details about firms at the site.

Authorities launched a hunt and arrested a 38-year-old Bulgarian man and a 28-year-old Bulgarian woman at a Munich petrol station, he said.

The incident comes with Germany, a key backer of Ukraine in its fight against Russia, on high alert for sabotage plots linked to Moscow.

Berlin has accused Russia of recruiting "low-level agents," usually people paid small sums and with little training, to carry out such acts.

Tensions soared this week after Berlin formally blamed Russia for an attempted "hybrid attack" involving an explosive-laden drone at a strategic airport in Leipzig last month and announced diplomatic counter-measures.
